Mission impossible?

Jo Bibby asks if the Government’s blueprint for levelling up can really deliver the healthier and fairer society it promises. She explains why it feels more a case of the emperor’s new clothes than a genuine proposition.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone who couldn't sign up to the 12 missions outlined in the recently published Levelling Up White Paper. Better homes, more jobs, less crime, places we can feel proud to call home.

And for anyone wanting to see a healthier, fairer society – positioning a health mission alongside all the wider factors that drive ill health – what's not to like? But the consensus seems to be ‘full marks on vision, needs to try harder on deliverability'.
