MJ HOUSING: Finding a place young people can call home

Lewisham LBC is committed to providing 1,000 social homes in the next four years, new council-owned homes for private rent, and more ‘pop-up’ modular developments. It’s a strategy with young people at its heart, says Mayor Damien Egan.

Lewisham, like many other London boroughs, is facing the effects of the severe housing crisis. There are more than 10,000 households on our housing waiting list and more residents are being forced into the increasingly precarious and costly private rented sector.

All of this, combined with the rising cost of living, is particularly challenging for young people. Research from Centrepoint reveals that over 103,000 young people in the UK are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This is a national scandal.
