Making money talk on the climate

Greg Notman looks at the challenges local authorities face in reaching net zero, and considers how to overcome barriers in order to attract external investment

The public sector has a vital role to play in reaching net zero. Local authorities will need to reduce municipal emissions from their own operations, but also help to influence emission reduction from residents and businesses within their boundaries.

In Wales, there is a government-led ambition for net zero public sector emissions by 2030, to which local authorities are contributing. The Wales Centre for Public Policy recently prepared a report for the Welsh Local Government Association on a local authority-led transition to net zero, looking at how local authorities can meet decarbonisation targets.
