Most London boroughs to freeze council tax

Some 27 out of 33 of the capital's councils will take Government’s cash sweetener to freeze council tax in 2014/15.

Most London boroughs will accept the Government's cash grant to freeze council tax this year, research by the BBC has revealed.

Some 27 out of the capital's 33 councils are set to either peg council tax to 2013/14 levels or reduce them when setting their budgets, figures compiled by BBC Sunday Politics London indicated.

Of the six London boroughs yet to make a decision – four raised local charges last year Bromley LBC, Croydon LBC, Lewisham and Wandsworth LBC.  The the City of London and Hounslow are the others yet to announce figures.

The boroughs which already agreed to freeze council tax this year are: Barking, Bexley, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Haringey, Havering, Hillingdon, Islington, K&C, Lambeth, Merton, Newham, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Local government minister, Brandon Lewis said: ‘We already know that the majority of councils, particularly in London, are going to be freezing council tax or even cutting it this year.

‘It shows that well-run councils can deliver more for less.'
