ECONOMIC GROWTH

Moving on from the poverty pageant

Professor Graeme Atherton says an end to ‘poverty pageant’ bidding for growth funding would mean at least some cash would get to those most in need of investment.

The distribution of the second round of levelling up funding has seen new parts of the country receive money.

Over 190 areas have now benefitted from this fund over its two rounds. Only three areas – all in Northern Ireland - have been allocated monies from both rounds of the scheme. But the second round has also seen a definite move of funding southwards and away from the most deprived areas. Compared to the first round, southern areas are receiving nearly £300m more in the second round  – mainly at the expense though of the Midlands not the North. Despite the second round funding pot being £500m larger, the Midlands is receiving £66m less.
