MPs demand 'unspun' statistics from government

Government press officers and statisticians should ensure press releases give meaningful picture of the truth behind official figures.

Government press officers and statisticians should do more to ensure departmental press releases provide an accurate and meaningful picture of the truth behind official figures, MPs have demanded.

A report issued today by the Public Accounts Select Committee (PASC) calls for statistics to be presented ‘unspun' in press releases and not used to create newsworthy headlines which hide more significant long-term trends.
