MPs call for statutory duty on sustainability

An influential group of MPs has urged ministers to draft a new, statutory duty for councils to apply sustainability principles to planning and other functions of local government.

An influential group of MPs has urged ministers to draft a new, statutory duty for councils to apply sustainability principles to planning and other functions of local government.

The Commons environmental audit select committee – which has been handed the task of monitoring sustainability in government policies – said the Bill must also provide a commitment to define the term ‘sustainable development' in a planning context.
