National Partnership Agreement needs strong engagement and sustainable funding

Without careful planning, the ‘Right Care, Right Person’ approach risks adding to the burden on people who find themselves in mental health crisis, says Cllr David Fothergill.

Responding to a mental health crisis is extremely sensitive and complex, involving a myriad of considerations and a range of local partners, including councils and police.

Councils recognise that the police may not always be the most appropriate service to respond to a mental health crisis. There may be moments in which the presence of a member of the police force could be inappropriate or even worsen a situation.
