A national workforce strategy is needed to tackle skills shortage

With pay likely to remain stagnant and labour shortages to continue, local authorities need a robust workforce strategy with the full backing of central Government, says Michael Burton.

Hot on the heels of galloping inflation and declining public sector pay is another workforce crisis, namely the chronic labour shortage, which particularly affects local government.

The sector has suffered for years from a shortage of planners, care workers, environmental health officers and IT technicians. More recently, the skills shortage has extended up the hierarchy to senior management as any scrutiny of The MJ's back pages will testify.
