Benefit rules preventing young people from volunteering for more than two days a week are ‘counterproductive' and ‘must be reviewed' in the light of record youth unemployment levels, the Local Government Association (LGA) has claimed.

Under current arrangements, Jobseeker's Allowance claimants must be available to attend job interviews at 48-hours' notice, and risk having benefits removed if they don't.
