Neill talks tough on new standards regime

Local government minister, Bob Neill, today defended the incoming standards regime for councillors' behaviour.

Local government minister, Bob Neill, today defended the incoming standards regime for councillors' behaviour, claiming moves to make serious misconduct a criminal offence represent 'a tough stance on town hall corruption'.

Under new arrangements which come into effect 1 July, councils must appoint an independent person to advise on allegations of misconduct, establish a register of members-financial interests which it would be a criminal offence to breach.
