SOCIAL CARE

NHS long term plan only offers part of the solution

Chairman of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board Ian Hudspeth says until social care is fully funded and public health budget cuts reversed, pumping funding into the NHS continues to be the same as 'pouring water into a sink with no plug in it'.

A properly functioning NHS and fully funded social care sector are inextricably linked, as well as being vital services in their own right. Taxpayer investment in the NHS will not be used effectively unless there is also a sustainable funding solution for social care, public health services and other council services that contribute to improved health and wellbeing.

We are pleased that the Government has published the NHS Long Term Plan and that it sets out an ambition to build a new service model for the 21st century with health bodies working in partnership with local government.
