Annemarie O’Donnell has been appointed George Black’s replacement as chief executive of Glasgow City Council.

Annemarie O'Donnell has been appointed George Black's replacement as chief executive of Glasgow City Council.

The decision to appoint Ms O'Donnell, who will begin to assume chief executive duties with immediate effect, follows Mr Black's announcement in August of his decision to retire at the end of this year, having worked for Glasgow since 1990 and held the top post since 2003.

Ms O'Donnell, a qualified solicitor, said she was ‘delighted and humbled to have been appointed'.

She said: ‘This is a really exciting time for Glasgow. There is no doubt the next few years will be challenging for everyone in local government.'
