Ofsted has published a league table of local authorities' schools performance for the first time in its 20-year history.

The education watchdog Ofsted has published a league table of local authorities' schools performance for the first time in its 20-year history ahead of major crackdown on underperforming regions in the New Year.

From January, England will be divided into eight regions each with a director tasked with tackling what Ofsted called the 'stark and unacceptable' inequalities in children's education between council areas.
