Better outcomes and better value?

Social impact bonds can help commissioners exploit the potential of outcomes-based contracting. Andrew Levitt explains the financial support available from central government to make them happen

Outcomes contracts are becoming an increasingly important tool for public sector commissioners: about £15bn worth were commissioned across central and local government during the last parliament. But this is just scratching the surface.

There is huge potential for this approach to deliver transformative results in areas like children's services, homelessness and healthcare – especially now that the process of commissioning them is getting simpler, faster and cheaper.
