Overcoming the dangers of digital disconnect

With a gap existing between local government’s digital aspirations and the public’s confidence in services, how are local authorities engaging with users? Nick Wilson examines the case

It's a challenging time for local authorities, who face uncertainty around changes with EU laws and regeneration funding, alongside ongoing pressure to drive efficiencies without impacting upon public services. In a bid to support these challenges, the Government is driving through various digital services initiatives.

There's little argument about the pressing need to adopt a digital approach – with the right tools and technology, it can help local authorities to better understand the needs of their citizens, and ultimately target services where they are most needed while keeping their public engaged. However, today's public have the same expectations of their local authority as they do their online stores – choice, trust and outstanding service – and it's vital that authorities connect and engage with them via the channels they want and expect.
