The chairman of LG Communications, Cormac Smith, has rejected as ‘misleading' accusations that council communications departments are over-staffed, overly-political and responsible for the decline of local newspapers.

The charges were levelled after journalists' trade magazine, Press Gazette, revealed the findings of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request sent to 435 city, borough and district councils asking how many staff were employed in their council's communications department.
