Public health inequalities could widen if the funding ring-fence is not maintained and without a change to make sure upper tier authorities receive a fair share of grant funding, an influential spending watchdog has today claimed.

A report from the Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) into Public Health England's grant to local authorities expressed concern the Department for Health is not sharing target funding allocations quickly enough.

The MPs noted around one-in-three of England's 152 upper tier local authorities get a funding slice that is more than 20% above or below their fair share.
