Panels need to raise their game

Publishing the Committee on Standards in Public Life’s latest report, Lord Bew argues that police and crime panels need to raise their game and play a more strategic role in scrutinising their police and crime commissioners (PCCs).

There is no doubt that the new democratic accountability in policing - brought about by the election of PCCs (police and crime commissioners) - has shaken things up. 

The arrival of a single, powerful and visible individual for each police force has brought new impetus, ideas and ways of working but resting substantial power in a single ‘unshackled' figure has also led to some serious questions about probity and the meaning of accountability.
