Parties promise less austerity but little more on devolution

Local government received a passing mention in last week’s party manifestos but their main focus was on tax and spend and controversial plans for health and care. Michael Burton reports.

Last week's party manifestos had a common theme, that the complaints of the ‘left behind' (as dubbed by Conservatives) or ‘the many, not the few' (as termed by Labour) who upset the political apple cart by voting Brexit must be heard.

So, Labour's manifesto promised the earth, paid for by the denigrated wealthy ‘few' while the Tories pledged more intervention on pension funds and top pay. The Liberal Democrats backed a 1p rise in income tax ringfenced to health and care.
