After 13 years at the helm of Kensington and Chelsea, local government's most prominent leader Sir Merrick Cockell, has announced his plans to step down. He spoke to Heather Jameson about his time as leader and as chairman of the LGA.

Sir Merrick Cockell sits in his office at Kensington town hall. Despite the modernisation of some parts of the building, with open plan offices and light airy space, the leader's office remains wood panelled and impressive. It is a space that matches his traditional approach to his position.
