The West of England Partnership has appointed Simon Birch as its first chief executive. Mr Birch, 55, will work on improving partnership working between Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City and North Somerset andSouth Gloucestershire councils, together with their key partners.

 All four councils were praised in last week's ODPM-backed State of the Cities report for their partnership working.
