Can party loyalties survive until the May elections?

With political loyalties torn apart after just a week of the EU referendum debate, Michael Burton questions whether MPs and the public have the stomach for a fourth month campaign

One week into the EU referendum debate and political loyalties are already splitting asunder. We are 10 weeks from parliamentary and assembly elections in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In England on the same day, 5 May, there are mayoral elections in London, Liverpool, Bristol and Salford and at 128 English local authorities including all-outs at Rotherham, Knowsley, Bristol, Peterborough, Warrington, Sheffield and a dozen districts. Yet by the time we get there the political parties battling for votes will have torn themselves apart over the referendum.
