The clear path for care reform

Genuine social care reform can be achieved now, by hearing the voices of those on the ground, says Cllr Mike Stonard

Committed to taking immediate action to stabilise the UK care sector, the Government is taking foundational steps. For example, the Casey Commission has been launched to develop a solution for long-term adult social care sector reform.

Despite valuable attempts to initiate change, the proposals for funding and major reform of the social care sector are set to be delayed. And UK local authorities, charged with funding and delivering such care services and burdened by an outdated and costly system, are near breaking point. For adult social care services alone, more than 80% of councils are expected to overspend their budget in the current financial year.
