Government plans to increase local government workers' pensions contributions threaten a disastrous collapse in the sector's pension funds, posing enormous risks to major UK banks and companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, Unison has warned.

According to a study conducted by the UK's largest union, local government pension funds (LGPFs) own investments worth £160bn, a portfolio equivalent to one of the largest institutional investors in the world.
