Reports that communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has gone head to head with the Chancellor to defend councils over further spending cuts have been dismissed as 'untrue' by Whitehall insiders.

Statements earlier this week claimed a 'Cabinet rift' had emerged as Mr Pickles and home secretary Theresa May led a revolt over further budget tightening.
