Pickles vows council tax referendum crackdown

Ministers announce change in council tax referendums' rules so all local revenue could trigger local votes.

Rules governing council tax referendums will be changed to bring all local revenue – including levies raised by bodies such as transport and waste authorities – within the ambit for triggering local votes, ministers have announced.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has issued a written Parliamentary statement pledging to make local levying bodies accountable for budgetary decisions which affect council tax levels.
