No one is going to shed a tear for well-paid council directors but in the interests of fairness, and the fact that they are readers of The MJ, we ought at least to point out some facts missing from this week's TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) ‘town hall rich list.'
The TPA first defined £100,000 as a top pay threshold when it ran its first rich list 12 years ago. If inflation is taken into account, that threshold ought to be £127,000 now, which would make for a more accurate comparison (and ditto for its £150,000 threshold as well). In 2008/9 there were 1,250 council directors on over £100,000 and in 2017/18, 2,454. But if that 2008 threshold increased in line with inflation the figure in 2017 would, of course, be lower.
