Planning applications could be processed by private sector bodies or other councils under pilot schemes to introduce competition.

Minister Brandon Lewis last week brought forward an amendment in the Housing and Planning Bill that would allow external third parties to process planning applications while still allowing the local authority to determine the outcome.
