The planning system is undermining local democracy

Looking ahead to the imminent housing white paper, Andrew Walker argues the planning system is weighted too heavily in favour of developers and undermines local democracy.

As we look ahead to the expected government white paper on housing next week, new research from LGiU and the National Trust shows that councillors are worried that local democracy is being undermined. 

We have long talked about the need to build more houses across the country. This need is particularly acute in some areas. But it is vitally important that councils are able to ensure houses are built in a way that services local needs and joins up with public space and infrastructure. The planning system is a key pillar of local democracy, which should empower local communities and their representatives to do just that.
