Government plans to curtail local authorities’ investigatory powers lack credibility, civil liberties campaigners have warned.

Government plans to curtail local authorities' investigatory powers lack credibility, civil liberties campaigners have warned.

Under proposals outlined 14 June by the home secretary, Theresa May, councils would be stripped of their powers – held under the the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 – to access information belonging to private individuals, including phone calls, e-mails and Internet use.
