London Councils chief executive reflects on a year of adapting to new public health responsibilities.

I had cause recently to look back at entries in my diary for the same week of a year ago.  Apart from finding the reference I was looking for, my eye was also caught by a meeting to discuss some of the issues that were, at that point, pressing in on councils about the transfer of public health responsibilities.

It brought back what I recalled as being quite a challenging meeting.  There was anxiety on both the Health Service and local government sides of the table, worry about hitting critical milestones in advance of the April 2013 transition, as well as on-going tension about the environment for staff transfer.

Now, the point of this recollection is not to say how needless all of that concern and anxiety was.  There were real issues that councils and health partners across the country had to grapple with and resolve.
