The next PM must deliver on pledges to boost council autonomy

Whichever party wins the General elections, they must deliver on promises made to increase autonomy in local government and increase our ability to plan for a sustainable future, writes Claire Kober.

On 19 June the Queen's Speech will set out the legislative agenda of a new Government. It is less than two years since it was announced that 100% of business rates would be devolved to local government by 2020 and grant funding from central government would be phased out.

Over the next few weeks, I am sure many will be poring over the party manifestos and trying to make sense of how they will shape policy and legislation over the coming years.
