A major concern for many people currently is the future of the environment; the impact of unsustainable corporate practices on the planet has motivated activism across the globe. Governments are responding with legislative measures to help safeguard the new generations from environmental catastrophe. In the UK, on a local level, councils are trying to play their part by ramping up recycling efforts, protecting wildlife and promoting sustainable building and travel.
Working towards large environmental policy shifts can seem an insurmountable challenge, but implementing plans at the local level can make a big difference. Every little helps. So, as a council, where is one place can you make a big impact? The answer is parking. In 2019, London was the first city to implement an ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) across the city. Drivers in these zones with higher-polluting vehicles face paying an additional congestion charge. Although there are good results from this penalisation, implementing such a scheme can be a costly and time-consuming undertaking, to the extent that many cities have had to push back launch dates because of delays with the emissions tracking technology.
