Nine out of 10 councils are well prepared for their cuts and will balance their books, according to figures published today by the Audit Commission.

But auditors have warned the remaining 10% of authorities – as many as 35 councils – could fail to hit their 2011/12 budget targets, and potentially, face further in-year spending cuts in a bid to balance their books.
