Under pressure

Councils were working hard over Christmas to deal with devastating flooding. Yet serious concerns are being raised that climate change could double flood damage in coming years, even with continued spending on flood defences. Thomas Bridge reports

It was a decidedly unhappy Christmas for some. Those afflicted by the sweeping floods across the north of England were given little respite over the festive period, while council workers deployed to protect and rescue members of the community were busier than ever.

Yet with flooding now becoming a festive tradition almost as regular as the Queen's Speech, is enough being done to protect communities and plan for the future?
