Preventing another tragedy

The report on the Grenfell Tower fire proposes establishing a joint competent authority, comprising local authority building standards, fire and rescue authorities and the Health and Safety Executive, to manage safety risks in high-rise tower blocks. Hiba Mahamadi reports on its powers to ensure future building safety.

One year after a low-grade refurbishment resulted in a deadly blaze and the death of 71 people at the Grenfell Tower in London, the Government's much anticipated independent review of building regulations and fire safety has been published. 

Chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt, the report proposes a new system to regulate work on buildings more than 10 storeys high. At its core, the review calls for greater collaboration – between local authorities, contractors, tenants and the Government – to ensure the safety of residents.
