Prisoner release to pile pressure on councils

Extra pressure will be piled onto housing and health services when 5,500 offenders are released from prisons in September and October, the chief probation officer for England and Wales, Kim Thornden-Edwards, has admitted.

Extra pressure will be piled onto housing and health services when 5,500 offenders are released from prisons in September and October, the chief probation officer for England and Wales, Kim Thornden-Edwards, has admitted. 

Thornden-Edwards' remarks came after the House of Commons backed legislation to reduce the amount of time prisoners must spend in jail before they are automatically released from 50% of their sentence to 40%.
