A new report from the National Audit Office on local government financial sustainability doubles down on previous calls for a whole system, cross government approach. Ann McGauran reports

The UK's public spending watchdog has once again cast a look over local government finances and raised its eyebrows in response to the overwhelming scale of the challenges ahead.

In 2021, when the National Audit Office (NAO) last reported on local government finance, it highlighted the financial position as a cause for concern and an uncertain outlook. Finances are now becoming unsustainable, the latest report concludes.
