Public health, three years on

Three years on since public health moved from the NHS to local government, Jim McManus explains how Hertfordshire has responded to the changes

Undoubtedly, moving to local government has given public health a new lease of life. Not only has it improved our relationships with other county council departments, but it has also strengthened connections with our partners, enabling us to work more effectively and have a very real influence on local service provision.

In local government we have far more financial autonomy, with our own dedicated funding stream and control of our own commissioning arrangements.
