Since the coalition came to power, communities secretary Eric Pickles has had a list of personal pet peeves to put right – from weekly bin collections to a bonfire of the quangos.

Some of these projects have been more successful than others. Rightly or wrongly, the rising tide of senior salaries has turned following the intervention of the secretary of state. It will be some time before we see what real impact this has on the sector.
