The British high street is a construct which is innately part of our national identity. But, increasingly, what it is there for is open to question.

August's riots in London and other cities have given fresh impetus to the debate over the purpose of our town centres, and what we can expect from them as consumers, as residents, or as people who want to make the most of their leisure time.
