Officials at Brighton & Hove City Council recently backed down after effectively kidnapping a doormat from a resident and holding it to ransom.

Housing inspectors confiscated a £7 doormat from the entrance to a property in a communal hallway, concerned that it constituted a breach of fire safety rules.
