Putting Hillingdon's best foot forward to tackle climate change

Representing one of the largest London boroughs, Hillingdon LBC is embarking on an ambitious path to decarbonisation with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by the end of the decade. Gary Penticost explains

Last April, Hillingdon LBC secured the largest government grant in Greater London for a local authority decarbonisation project. Four of the council's largest buildings – including its flagship Civic Centre in Uxbridge – have since been retrofitted with solar panels, airsource heat pumps and other measures to minimise their carbon footprint.

Hillingdon is the second largest of the 32 London boroughs, bordering Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, and is home to Heathrow Airport and Brunel University. In 2020, the council made a pledge for its operations to be carbon neutral by the end of the decade.
