Queen's Speech 2014: pledges on apprenticeships and minimum wage

Commitment to increase the total number of apprenticeships to two million and higher fines on firms in breach of minimum wage duties.

The Queen's Speech restated the Coalition commitment to implement reforms designed to increase the total number of apprenticeships to two million by the end of the Parliament.

The ambitions target, which was referred to in the speech itself, was set out in the Richard Review which recommended workplace skills programmes should be made more rigorous and responsive to the needs of employers.
