A question of reserves

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ desire for more data on councils’ levels of reserves has sparked a range of responses across the sector, as Martin Ford reports.

A single line in a ministerial document sent alarm bells ringing throughout those in charge of council finance teams up and down the country last month.

The policy statement put out by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) was intended to offer some assurance to local authorities as they attempted to plan their budgets for the next few years.
