A questionable future

Sandra Dinneen looks ahead to the future of local government finance and says districts must be recognised

It's fair to say that we still don't know exactly what the local government finance landscape is going to look like over the next few years following the Spending Review announcement three weeks ago. While the Government has suggested local government will be facing a 6.7% cut by 2020, the Institute for Fiscal Studies has placed it as high as 56%. What do we do now?

One of the primary issues to emerge for district councils is that funding to support growth is being moved to plug the social care funding gap.

Understandably, there were some big announcements regarding the growing need for funding for social care, including the optional 2% increase in council tax and additional funds for the Better Care Fund. There were also hints of a consultation on rebalancing support between authorities with social care responsibility.
