Senior civil servants have privately cast doubt on whether the Government will continue its offer of exceptional financial support to struggling councils, The MJ understands.

The offer of exceptional financial support had been a key plank of the previous Government's policy platform, with ministers agreeing a deal with 19 councils to help them manage their financial pressures in 2024-25.
