The queue: the symbol of a united Britain – for now

The queue, the glorious ceremony of a state funeral, was a moment of community cohesion, of unity and togetherness, says Heather Jameson. 'The trick now would be to harness that cohesion.'

For nearly two weeks, the country has stopped to mourn the death of the Queen and the passing of the country into a new era.

National and local government, the Armed Forces and the Crown all came together to create a truly majestic funeral for Queen Elizabeth II. While local government's contribution may go largely unnoticed by the public – as it so often does when things go right – the nation owes this sector a debt of gratitude.
