Local authorities are free to raise council tax by as much as they want, according to communities secretary, Eric Pickles, if they accept the consequences.

Speaking to The MJ after last week's Spending Review, which dealt a further 10% blow to council coffers, Mr Pickles suggested if councils feel they need more cash, they should raise their taxes.
